Job Summary

The NIH/NINDS Surgical Neurology Branch seeks a neurosurgeon-scientist focused on tumors of the central and peripheral nervous system for a Tenure-Track Investigator (High Scarcity) position located in Bethesda, MD. The incumbent will participate in clinical care at the NIH Clinical Center, lead a cutting-edge research program that integrates basic, translational, and clinical studies, and collaborate with neuro-oncology, neuropathology, and radiation oncology researchers. Preferred candidates will be active practicing neurosurgeons with an active research portfolio on CNS/PNS tumor biology and pathophysiology. Candidates should hold an MD, DO, or MD/PhD (or equivalent) and have board eligibility or board certification. Salary and laboratory/facilities support are competitive with premier academic institutions; opportunities for additional clinical work at outside centers may be available. Appointees may be US citizens, permanent residents, or eligible non-US citizens, with a required background check and drug testing prior to appointment. Applicants must submit CV, bibliography, and three references, with an optional 1–2 page statement outlining background and interests. Review begins July 6, 2026, and continues until the position is filled.

Required Qualifications

  • MD, DO, or MD/PhD degree (or equivalent)
  • Board eligibility or board certification in neurosurgery
  • Active practicing neurosurgeon
  • Ability to develop and direct a cutting-edge research program that informs clinical work
  • Willingness to conduct clinical studies and provide clinical care as part of NIH intramural research program
  • Full-time NIH employee status or eligibility to obtain work authorization
  • Collaborative research with neuro-oncology, neuropathology, and radiation oncology teams
