Job Summary
Survey, monitor, and treat patches of invasive plants on the Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge, including Champion Lake, Timber Lake, and Luce Bayou Tract. Assist staff in mapping and collecting samples from tawny crazy ant populations and conduct wildlife surveys for forest birds. Support habitat restoration and invasive species control efforts to protect biodiversity in the 30,000-acre bottomland hardwood forest ecosystem. Work Monday through Friday, 8:00 am-4:30 pm, with occasional Saturday availability for special events. Receive a living allowance of $600/week and free housing while contributing approximately 40 hours weekly. This 27-week placement offers professional development opportunities within a partnership between American Conservation Experience and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Required Qualifications
- Authorized to work in the United States
- Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner
- Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group
- Valid driver's license
- Insurable driving record
- Age 21 or older to drive
- Willing to undergo and must pass the required criminal history checks
- Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
- Willingness to complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, end of term evaluations, and mid-term evaluations for longer terms
- Commitment to not participate in any prohibited activities as listed in the Member Service Agreement
- Willingness to embrace travel opportunities as they arise to other nearby Refuges
- Personal vehicle for travel during off days to get groceries, etc.
- Ability to count animals through binoculars or a scope
- Ability to move up to 75 pounds
- Strict adherence to FWS and ACE equipment training, certification and safety protocols
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) for any activity that requires it
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree
- Relevant experience in subject areas such as biology, natural resource management, ecology, botany, or another related subject area
- Knowledge of/experience in plant identification, habitat restoration, and/or invasive species management
- Ability to follow assigned protocols to perform tasks with many steps
- Basic knowledge of hand and power tools, or heavy equipment experience
