Job Summary

Provide interpreting and transliterating services for hearing impaired students in a part-time school setting. Responsibilities include interpreting/transliterating for assigned students, enforcing school policies, assisting in determining appropriate interpreting methods with the student’s case manager, supporting classroom routines, coordinating tutoring or follow-up sessions, acting as a liaison between the case manager and teachers, interpreting for related participants (teachers, aides, parents), assisting with interpretation at special activities, pursuing ongoing professional growth as an educational interpreter, and performing other related duties to support the program. Required qualifications include HS education or equivalent with 60+ college credits or ability to pass the district parapro test, valid fingerprint clearance, EIPA 4.0-5.0 or RID credentials, NAD Level 3+ certification, familiarity with ASL/other sign systems, and knowledge of RID Ethics; skills emphasize communication, collaboration, adaptability to student needs, and cultural awareness of Deaf culture. The position is located in Mesa, Arizona and is part-time (21.25 hours/week) with no listed relocation benefits and performance pay available annually.

Required Qualifications

  • High School education or equivalent required and 60+ college credits OR the ability to pass the parapro test provided by the district free of charge
  • Valid Arizona IVP fingerprint clearance card
  • Meet Arizona Department of Education standards of EIPA 4.0-5.0 or RID CT and/or RID CI or NAD 5 or NIC
  • Valid certificate from the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) at Level 3 or higher
  • Working knowledge and experience with sign to voice and voice to sign interpreting proficiency in at least one sign communication system such as American Sign Language (ASL) or Oral Interpreting
  • Working knowledge and experience of the RID Code of Ethics as implemented for educational interpreters; professional development plan
