Job Summary

To provide interpreting and transliterating services for hearing impaired students. Key responsibilities include providing interpreting and transliterating services for assigned hearing impaired student; upholding school rules and policies; assisting in evaluating appropriate interpreting methods for mainstream classes in collaboration with the student’s case manager; aiding in normal classroom routines by clarifying concepts and guiding students; coordinating tutoring or follow-up sessions; serving as a liaison between the student’s case manager and regular classroom teachers; interpreting for hearing impaired individuals involved in Mesa Public Schools programs; referring questions to the appropriate case manager; interpreting at special activities; pursuing ongoing professional growth as an educational interpreter; maintaining regular attendance; performing other duties as assigned by the Hearing Impaired Program Regional Director and related duties to support the work unit; and assisting with other area duties as appropriate. The position emphasizes interpreting proficiency in ASL or other sign systems, ethics adherence, collaboration with educators, classroom presence, and the ability to support deaf or hard-of-hearing students in various school settings. Required Qualifications

  • High School education
  • Associate’s Degree or 60+ college credit hours required at time of hire OR the ability to pass the ParaPro Test provided by the district free of charge
  • Valid Arizona IVP fingerprint clearance card
  • Meet minimum Arizona Department of Education standards of EIPA 3.5-3.9 or NAD 3
  • Valid certificate if Interpretation (CI) and/or Certificate of Transliteration (CT) from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID)
  • Working knowledge and experience with sign to voice and voice to sign interpreting proficiency in at least one sign communication system such as American Sign Language (ASL) or Oral interpreting
  • Working knowledge and experience with the RID Code of Ethics as implemented for educational interpreters; professional development plan
  • Models the attributes and skills of the MPS Portrait of a Graduate

  • Ability to effectively communicate (verbal and written) with English proficiency (verbal and written)
  • Basic knowledge of child and language development

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with district personnel and to work as a member of a team
  • Regular and on-time attendance required
