Job Summary

Power Electronics Intern at Heron Power will design, develop, and validate medium-voltage power electronic systems alongside a team of seasoned engineers. You will gain hands-on experience with real hardware, contribute to hardware development from concept to prototyping and testing, and deepen understanding of high-voltage systems, converter architectures, and control systems. You’ll model and simulate power converter topologies using MATLAB/Simulink or PLECS, assist in component selection and schematic capture, and participate in bench testing and lab activities such as thermal profiling and EMC evaluation. Collaboration across firmware, mechanical design, validation, and manufacturing will be essential as you help bring scalable, efficient energy systems to the grid. Prior internships or research in power electronics, PCB design familiarity with tools like Altium or KiCad, and programming for test automation (Python, MATLAB, embedded C) are nice-to-haves.

Required Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Electrical Engineering (or related field) with strong academic focus on power electronics
  • Solid understanding of power electronics fundamentals, including converter topologies (buck, boost, inverter, LLC, etc.) and switching device operation
  • Familiarity with circuit simulation tools such as SPICE, LTspice, or PLECS
  • Exposure to gate drivers, sensing circuits, and magnetic component behavior
  • Experience using basic lab equipment (oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies) and comfort working in a hands-on lab environment
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment

Desired Qualifications

  • Power electronics internship experience
  • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink or PLECS
  • Lab hardware bring-up and testing experience
  • Circuit simulation and modeling skills
  • Strong communication and teamwork
