Intermediate Environmental Field Technician

Job Summary
Coordinate and execute environmental projects including data gap reviews, Phase I and II site assessments, and remediation initiatives. Conduct site visits, inspections, and hazardous building materials assessments while overseeing drilling activities and subcontractor management. Collect soil, groundwater, and air samples; interpret environmental data against regulatory frameworks; and prepare detailed reports documenting investigation results. This hybrid role requires a 65/35 field-to-office split with regional travel across Alberta and the prairies. Candidates must possess strong supervision skills for junior colleagues and demonstrate experience working at contaminated sites such as refineries, mines, or industrial facilities.
Required Qualifications
- Technical Diploma or bachelor's degree in environmental science, engineering, earth sciences, or related field
- 3+ years of experience in soil, groundwater and vapour sampling, and overseeing drilling activities and subcontractor management
- Direct experience working at contaminated sites such as: industrial facilities, refineries/bulk plants/gas stations, military properties, commercial processing plants, federal government properties, airports, mines, power plants, wind farms and solar facilities
- Strong understanding of field protocols including soil, groundwater, and vapour sampling, and overseeing drilling activities and subcontractor management
- Maintain knowledge and familiarity with provincial and federal regulatory frameworks
- Diligent interpretation of environmental data
- Comparison of sample results to applicable guidelines and standards
- Preparation of reports documenting the results of investigation programs
- Independently supervise contractors (drillers, daylighters, utility locators, etc.)
- Demonstrated ability to supervise and mentor junior colleagues, fostering their professional growth and development
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Strong communication, interpersonal and writing skills; strong skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- The role may include a Hazardous Building Materials assessment component, including asbestos, lead, mould, silica etc.
- The part of the role will include a field component and applicants can expect to be at least 65/35 field/office based, with some out-of-town travel required
- Field work would include conducting hazardous building materials assessments, mould and indoor air quality investigations, developing specifications, authoring reports and asbestos management plans
- Work would also involve oversight of abatement and remediation activities, and collection of air samples for asbestos, lead, and mould
Desired Qualifications
- Registered as an E.I.T. or G.I.T.
- Eligibility for P.Eng. or P.Geo. considered an asset
- 3+ years of experience in soil, groundwater and vapour sampling, and overseeing drilling activities and subcontractor management preferred
