Interdisciplinary Engineering Group Manager - UWS UK

Job Summary

Own the strategy and delivery for all forms of tradecraft supply, managing permanent headcount, defining contingent worker requirements, and vetting external partners to ensure quality and continuity of the [JFLvl2] craft. Forecast future demand for [JFLvl2] skills with Sector/Portfolio Engineering Leadership to scale the talent mix appropriately across all UWS sites. Act as the key driver for tooling and infrastructure budgets, proactively defining UWS needs to secure funding for software, hardware, and while ensuring deployed tools remain fit for purpose. Define, maintain, and continuously improve the [JFLvl2] Craft Standard in accordance with Thales Engineering Fundamentals, ensuring compliance through Technical Leads. Lead the recruitment lifecycle for permanent employees, implement targeted retention strategies, and manage long-term career development and formal training for all staff. Provide dedicated support, mentorship, and pastoral care to employees navigating the matrix structure, serving as the primary escalation point for personal and structural conflicts. Conduct formal performance reviews focusing on craftsmanship competency and professional growth, while directing and coaching site-based Technical Leads in their daily roles.

  • Experience acting as a key driver and influencer for tooling and infrastructure budgets
  • Experience building business cases to secure funding for software, hardware, and infrastructure
  • Experience ensuring deployed tools and infrastructure remain fit for purpose
  • Experience identifying gaps and managing stakeholder expectations
  • Experience defining, maintaining, and continuously improving craft standards (best practices, technical specifications, and quality gates)
  • Experience ensuring compliance through Technical Leads
  • Experience owning and managing long-term career development and formal training for permanent employees
  • Experience partnering with Hw Delivery Leads to ensure project assignments support development action plans
  • Experience providing mentorship and pastoral care to employees
  • Experience acting as a primary escalation point for personal and structural conflicts
  • Experience conducting formal performance reviews focusing on craftsmanship competency
  • Experience directing, coaching, and supporting site-based Technical Leads
  • Experience coaching, mentoring, and quality assurance
  • Ability to ensure consistency of the craft across all geographical locations
  • Ability to work within a dual-reporting matrix structure
