Job Summary
NCSSM seeks a full-time Instructor of Spanish at its Durham campus. The position entails teaching three in-person residential Spanish course sections per semester and two short courses during January-Term, covering beginner through advanced levels and heritage learners. Responsibilities include developing clear course objectives, creating proficiency-based curricula, holding office hours and tutorials, monitoring student progress, fostering an engaging learning environment, and participating in departmental and school-wide activities. The role requires collaboration with colleagues across campuses, adherence to ACTFL standards, and willingness to teach in both residential and online programs, with potential leadership of January-Term sessions and opportunities to guide student travel. A Master’s degree in a World Language or related field and demonstrated language proficiency are required, with preference for experience teaching at the high school or undergraduate level and familiarity with innovative teaching methods and assessments.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in a World Language, linguistics, comparative literature, or a related field in the humanities, with a proven record of effective and inspiring teaching of Spanish, preferably with advanced high school or undergraduate students
- Demonstration of language proficiency in a World Language other than English (native speaker, degree in language, or certificate indicating advanced language study)
- Master’s degree is required
