Job Summary

Instructor for French language courses (FREN 1F00) with a focus on second-year language instruction. Duties include scheduled contact time with students, preparation of lectures, student consultations, marking and grading, and course administration including grade appeals and addressing academic dishonesty. Successful candidate will work closely with the BUFA course coordinator in multi-section courses or with the Director of French Studies for single-section courses. Qualifications include a graduate degree in French studies, native or near-native English and French, commitment to Standard International French, and demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team. Must incorporate web-based pedagogical techniques and use tools such as Brightspace; participate in online activities and testing; provide office hours and proctor exams. Positions are on-campus and governed by the Brock University Collective Agreement; applications should include required documentation.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate Degree (PhD, PhD abd) in an area of French studies with a record of sustained successful teaching of second-year language courses in French at a University level
  • Native or near native fluency in English and French
  • Commitment to and competence in the use of Standard International French
  • Teaching documentation: evidence of teaching competence in second-year language courses in French at University level; official student and peer evaluations; teaching dossier; references
  • Ability to work alone without immediate direct supervision
  • Ability to work within a team; clear comprehension of multi-section teaching; active participation in curriculum development; sharing of responsibilities in careful test preparation; student assessment; prompt and accurate marking
  • Commitment to participate in required committee marking including online activities, mid-term and final exams
  • Commitment to incorporation of web-based pedagogical techniques, materials and resources (including textbook instructional platform, etc.) in the teaching of the course
  • Competence in the use of email, Brightspace, internet, common office software (Word, Excel) and multimedia equipment
  • Commitment to responsible time management (course structuring, punctuality for lectures)
  • Availability for individual consultation with students (office hours 1.5 hours per section per week required) and proctoring exams
