Job Summary

Instruct swim lessons using the YMCA of the USA program while maintaining a safe, nurturing environment for all participants. Prepare lesson plans, manage class rosters, and track student progress through skill assessments and certificates. Enforce pool policies and emergency procedures to prevent accidents and respond immediately to any incidents. Demonstrate proficiency in six strokes, endurance, and proper teaching techniques while promoting YMCA programs and resolving member concerns. Maintain current BLS, First Aid, and swim instructor certifications. Minimum age 16; full-time role with on-call rotation.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum age of 16
  • Current American Safety & Health Institute or American Red Cross or American Heart Association BLS for the Professional Rescuer
  • Standard/Community First Aid certifications
  • Emergency Oxygen Administration
  • YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor Certification or ARC Water Safety Instructor
  • Experience instructing swim lessons or coaching aquatic programs
  • Ability to swim 25 yards each of the six strokes (front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke, elementary backstroke and butterfly)
  • Ability to tread water for 2 minutes with two different kicks
  • Ability to swim with proficiency and endurance
  • Ability to react appropriately and remain calm and efficient in caring for problems
  • Knowledge of proper swimming techniques
  • Physical, visual, and auditory ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations

Desired Qualifications

  • American Red Cross (ARC) or YMCA Lifeguard Training
