Instructional Assistant - Special Education, Occupational Course of Study

Job Summary
Support teachers in coordinating instructional programs for special education students by familiarizing yourself with Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and ensuring an encouraging, safe, and healthful learning environment. Assist with implementing behavioral intervention plans, planning classroom procedures, and preparing necessary materials while promoting student independence and self-determination. Provide direct in-class support, including mobility assistance, hygiene needs, and the use of assistive technology devices, while maintaining strict confidentiality of student records. Work Monday through Friday, occasionally covering evenings and weekends, with a maximum of 40 hours per week. Maintain Crisis Prevention and Intervention certification and participate in district staff development programs.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Six documented semester hours of coursework in early childhood education
- Two years of work experience in an early childhood setting
- Crisis Prevention and Intervention (CPI) certification
- Considerable knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point
- Considerable knowledge of Google Apps
- Working knowledge of successful instructional delivery methods
- Working knowledge of general classroom activities and routines
- Ability to protect the confidentiality of personally identifiable information in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA)
- Ability to work in a team environment and effectively collaborate with others
- Ability to motivate students
- Ability to constantly monitor and supervise the safety and well-being of students
- Ability to recognize and support students with a variety of backgrounds, abilities, exceptionalities, behavioral needs, and learning styles
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form using a variety of communication techniques and tools
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school system staff, students, parents, businesses, community agencies, and the public
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds of force occasionally
- Must be able to lift 25 pounds of force frequently
- Must be able to lift 10 pounds of force constantly
Desired Qualifications
- CPR and First Aid certification
- Experience working with or assisting individuals with special needs
