Job Summary
Instructional Assistant (Exceptional Education) provides instructional support in an exceptional education classroom or one-to-one settings. Assists with reinforcing material, self-care to build independence, prepares and maintains files, supports individual and group instruction, supervises students during the day, reinforces positive behavior, supports curriculum development, assists with mobility, toileting, and personal hygiene, maintains student records and educational displays, and participates in behavioral intervention programs. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs, complete online autism training within 60 days, and submit an online application with resume, transcript and license if applicable. Richmond Public Schools requires background investigation, fingerprinting, and tuberculosis screening. Salary range is $30,000 to $46,135 with full benefits.
Required Qualifications
- Passing score on the ParaPro Assessment
- Associate’s degree or completion of 60 hours of college credits from an accredited college or university recognized by the Virginia Department of Education
- One year of working experience as an instructional assistant preferred
- Experience working with children with disabilities preferred
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and demonstrate excellence in business English, grammar, spelling and punctuation
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
- Good skills in operating personal computers and related software
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities and work independently or with minimum supervision
- Knowledge of child growth, development and paraprofessional instructional procedures and practices
- Ability to assist in implementing behavioral intervention programs for children with emotional/behavioral disorders and maintain student disability records confidentially
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs
- Must complete online autism training within 60 days of start date
