Job Summary
Assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to individual or small groups; monitors and report student progress. Instructional Assistant I incumbents assist a certificated teacher by performing a variety of support functions in a regular classroom setting. Administer first aid and medications according to established policies and procedures; perform a broad variety of health services for students; assist teacher with crisis intervention and physical restraints of students; assist students with personal hygiene needs; tutor individuals or small groups of students; maintain records of student progress; participate as member of an instructional team; prepare and organize lessons; administer and score tests; monitor and report behavior; perform routine clerical duties; operate audio-visual equipment and educational training equipment; supervise labs and field trips; communicate with parents of absent students; ensure health and safety of students; assist in meetings and training; lift up to 50 pounds and restrain students with assistance.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED (or demonstrated progress toward obtaining GED) as required by Kentucky law
- 1) complete two years of study at an institution of higher education; 2) obtain an associate (or higher) degree; or 3) meet a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate knowledge of reading, writing, and mathematics (or reading readiness, writing readiness, and mathematics readiness)
- Some experience working with children in an organized setting
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and physically restrain and control a student up to 150 pounds with assistance
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, staff and the public; maintain regular attendance; perform routine clerical duties; operate instructional and office equipment
