Job Summary
Adapt classroom activities and materials to facilitate participation for special education students. Assist in developing, implementing, and modeling behavior and instructional support plans while preparing activities that reinforce learning. Train staff, parents, and pupils in specialized strategies and techniques for behavior intervention. Collect and record data on academic and behavioral information to monitor progress against identified goals. Implement alternative communication and social skill development techniques, including social stories and peer facilitation. Supervise pupils during assemblies, field trips, and in hallways to maximize independence. Report observations of incidents to appropriate personnel for documentation. Travel to varied school sites as required to perform services.
Required Qualifications
- Certified as outlined in No Child Left Behind
- High School Diploma or GED
- "Highly Qualified" training certification
- at least 48 hours of college
- associate's degree
- Ability to work well with students and adults
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Ability to maintain confidentiality in all situations in or out of the school environment
- Ability to follow directions, schedules, and Special Education programs as directed by the classroom teacher or principal
- Ability to understand the implications of a disability
- Ability to translate that understanding into good teaching practices as modeled by the classroom teacher
- Ability to maintain control under stressful situations
- Ability to effectively perform restraint techniques according to Lorena ISD guidelines
