Job Summary

The Healthcare Institutional Safety Officers (ISO) enforce bylaws and statutes within a hospital setting, work to ensure safe patient care and healthcare work environments, and interact with healthcare professionals, law enforcement, and other stakeholders. They provide enforcement, prevention, intervention and education under applicable legislation, handling high-frequency violent behaviours in acute and forensic mental health units. The role requires completing the ISO Training Program, achieving designation under the Police Services Act as an ISO, obtaining Qualified Person status under the Mental Health Act, passing a Physical Abilities test, and maintaining registrations and licenses (Manitoba Security Guard License, Class 5 driver’s license). Candidates should have prior security, law enforcement, military, or related experience (minimum two years as a Qualified Person in a healthcare setting) and possess strong verbal/written communication, professionalism under pressure, knowledge of Use of Force limits and applicable laws, and awareness of community health and Indigenous considerations. The position is in-person at Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg and requires ongoing training, background checks, and eligibility for security-related certifications. There is a note about potential staggered shifts (days/nights/weekends) and a 0.00 FTE indicator, with a standard full-time expectation in line with 2080 annual hours.

Required Qualifications

  • Successfully complete the ISO Training Program and maintain ongoing competence
  • Be designated as an ISO (Peace Officer status as per Manitoba Police Services Act)
  • Successfully complete intermediate weapons training and ongoing certification as authorized by Manitoba Justice and employer
  • Pass the Physical Abilities test and undergo regular re-testing
  • Complete the Healthcare Institutional Safety Officer training and demonstrate competency to be designated as per the Police Services Act
  • Complete Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Possess and maintain a valid Manitoba Security Guard License
  • Possess a valid Class 5 driver’s license
  • Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector, Child Abuse Registry, Adult Abuse Registry) maintained regularly
