Job Summary

Conduct inspections of licensed funeral operators and new applicants to verify compliance with the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act. Analyze documents, perform site visits, and prepare detailed reports with findings and recommendations for corrective actions. Assist in reviewing complaints, supporting legal proceedings, and providing testimony in court when required. Provide guidance to stakeholders on regulatory obligations, respond to inquiries, and participate in outreach initiatives to promote awareness of standards. Maintain accurate inspection records, contribute to internal tracking systems, and escalate concerns for enforcement actions. This hybrid role requires frequent travel, including occasional overnight stays, and may involve working outside standard hours. A valid driver's license and experience in the bereavement sector are essential.

Required Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in regulatory compliance, law enforcement, public administration, or a related field
  • 5+ years working in the bereavement sector and/or, have similar inspection work experience in a regulatory setting
  • Must have a valid G driver's license, access to a reliable car and a clear driving record
  • A calm personal confidence and ability to tactfully diffuse potentially hostile situations
  • Understanding of the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002 and/or experience and work with similar consumer protection legislation
  • Skilled in the interpretation, application and administration of legislation and knowledge of inspection protocols and methods to provide advice and expertise and to conduct inspections of non-compliance within a regulatory compliance/enforcement environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with an aptitude to influence through education and informed recommendations
  • Possess personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and commitment to corporate mission
  • Demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities and guiding investment in people and systems
  • Regular travel is required, including occasional overnight stays
  • Exposure to varying weather conditions and operational environments
  • May be required to work outside standard business hours, including evenings or weekends, depending on the urgency or complexity of inspections
  • The role involves exposure to emotionally charged situations and requires the ability to remain professional, composed, and objective during challenging interactions

Desired Qualifications

  • Certification or training in regulatory inspection, investigation techniques, or law enforcement is an asset
