Job Summary
Inpatient Coder applies ICD-10-CM/PCS coding to inpatient records, abstracts diagnoses and procedures, assigns APR-DRGs, and ensures accurate MHACs/PQIs with CDI collaboration. Roles include consulting with physicians on coding conventions, maintaining HIPAA confidentiality, accurately capturing detail from medical records for HSCRC/JCAHO guidelines, generating compliant physician queries, and contributing to abstract peer reviews and cross-department collaborations. Requires strong medical terminology knowledge, attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to work under productivity standards; expects familiarity with ICD-10-CM/CPT coding guidelines and continuing education to stay current with state and national coding updates.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Completion of a Coding Certificate Program is required
- CCS (Certified Coding Specialist) or RHIA or RHIT credential required
- 5 to 10 years’ hospital coding experience preferred
