Job Summary
Industrial PhD Student in Guardrails and Verified Planning & Control for AI-Based Autonomous Driving at TRATON Group R&D in collaboration with KTH, Södertälje, Sweden. Conduct doctoral research on safety assurance methods for AI-based autonomous driving systems; develop methods to ensure AI-generated driving behavior remains safe, feasible, and predictable for heavy-duty vehicles; design, implement, and evaluate algorithms using simulation, scenario-based testing, and relevant industrial toolchains. Collaborate with researchers from TRATON Group R&D and KTH; publish scientific results at leading conferences and journals; participate in doctoral courses, seminars, workshops, and the broader autonomous systems research community. Candidates should hold a Master’s degree in a relevant field, be self-motivated and analytical, able to work independently and in teams, and be fluent in English; experience with Python/C++/MATLAB/Simulink, ML, motion planning, optimization, safety assurance, vehicle modeling, autonomous vehicles/ADAS, and ROS or robotics middleware is advantageous. The role is part of a 450-person department focused on advanced driver assistance systems and Level 4 autonomous driving, with opportunities for professional growth, international exposure, and a structured development plan.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in a relevant technical field

- clear interest in autonomous systems, control, safety, and AI-based vehicle architectures
- experience with Python, C++, or MATLAB/Simulink (beneficial)
- experience with machine learning, motion planning, optimization, or safety assurance methods (beneficial)
- vehicle modeling or modeling of complex systems (beneficial)
- autonomous vehicles, ADAS, or intelligent transportation systems (beneficial)
- ROS or other robotics middleware (beneficial)
- scientific writing, peer-reviewed publications, or research project experience (beneficial)
