Job Summary
Use safety-approved air guns to remove grit and dust after blasting, then remove protective coverings to inspect cars for damage. Grind weld spatter, laminations, and sharp edges from inside tank or hopper cars, and level girth welds on floors as needed. Vacuum the complete interior of tank cars, foil and tape stainless steel sections, and maintain equipment while keeping work areas neat. Report potential hazards and follow written or verbal instructions with minimal supervision. Perform general mathematical calculations and coordinate manual dexterity with visual attention for sustained periods. Lift 50 pounds safely, drag blast hoses, and work in confined spaces or at heights exceeding 4 feet with proper PPE. Available to work any shift, including overtime per union contract.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma, GED, or pass a Combined Basic Skills Test
- Experience in machine operation
- Ability to work effectively and efficiently both as a member of a team and independently
- Ability to follow written and/or verbal instructions with minimal supervision
- Ability to read, interpret, and follow documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and assembly instructions
- Analytical and problem-solving skills, with a strong attention to detail
- Ability to perform general mathematical calculations including but not limited to addition, subtraction, multiplication, fractions, percentages, and division
- Safety and quality focused
- Availability to work any shift, and dependability to show up for scheduled work shifts including overtime, as allowed per the union contract
- Ability to lift 50 pounds safely and drag blast hose over the full length of railcar
- Ability to perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving the whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials
- Ability to work in confined spaces and at heights exceeding 4 ft. off the ground with proper PPE and fall protection
- Close mental and visual attention, coordinating manual dexterity with mental and visual attention for sustained periods of time
- Completion of additional job-related screening processes as permitted or required by applicable law, to include background check, physical, and drug and alcohol screen
