Job Summary
Provide in-person interpretation for parent-teacher conferences, IEP meetings, CSE meetings, student evaluations, and school orientations in Eastern Suffolk County, NY. Deliver accurate, complete, and culturally responsive communication between English and Turkish while preserving tone, intent, and strict confidentiality. Arrive punctually for all assignments and maintain professional neutrality with students, families, and educators. This role supports educational access and empowers school communities through effective cross-cultural communication.
Required Qualifications
- Be able to read, write, and speak proficiently in both English and Turkish
- Interpret spoken communication accurately and completely between both languages
- Understand written information and communicate it accurately when required
- Demonstrate strong listening, comprehension, and communication skills
- Be comfortable learning and using educational and special education terminology
- Be available to attend scheduled assignments in person in Eastern Suffolk County, New York
- Have reliable transportation or another dependable means of traveling to assignment locations
- Be able to arrive punctually at schools and other educational facilities
- Be willing to travel within the designated service area
- Provide accurate and current availability
- Understand that remote-only availability will not meet the requirements of this position
- Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and professionalism
- Maintain neutrality and confidentiality
- Demonstrate cultural awareness, sensitivity, and sound judgment
- Communicate promptly regarding assignment offers, scheduling, and attendance
- Work professionally with students, families, educators, administrators, and other school professionals
- Dress in appropriate business-casual attire unless otherwise instructed
Desired Qualifications
- Previous interpreting experience
- Experience in education, special education, human services, healthcare, legal services, or community interpreting
- Relevant interpreter training, certifications, and knowledge of educational or special education terminology
