Job Summary
Mount compressor and condenser units, fabricate and install ductwork, cut tubing, and join pipes using torches to complete refrigerant circuits. Install expansion valves, connect motors and control panels, and inject refrigerant to test systems while observing pressure gauges. Replace breaker controls, thermostats, and wiring to repair units, and wrap pipes in insulation. Service air conditioners ranging from fifteen to twenty tons in warehouses and small factory buildings. Requires HVAC certification, EPA certification, and ability to read blueprints under hazardous conditions.
Required Qualifications
- HVAC certification
- Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification to purchase and handle ozone depleting chemicals
- Ability to perform most complex and unusual tasks of the craft without supervision
- Ability to read and understand blueprints, construction drawings, schematics and diagrams
- Ability to perform work of the craft in a rapid and efficient manner under extreme conditions
- Ability to perform work safely under hazardous conditions
- Expert knowledge of craft theory and craft materials with the ability to apply the theory and select the proper materials
- Trained in all types and sizes of air conditioning refrigeration and evaporative cooling equipment
- Steam boiler knowledge
- Ability to successfully pass as required a federal, state, or local government's background investigation
- North American Technician Excellence (NATE) certification for heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR)
- One of the following: HVAC Excellence Professional Level Certification or UA Star HVAC Mastery Certification or Union Local Journeymen Certification
