Job Summary
Provide coverage for the HS&E Manager while off schedule, mentor HS&E Coordinators and Advisors, and lead the Operations Team through the health and safety management system independently. Conduct work area inspections, meet with field supervisors, and verify compliance with jurisdictional regulatory requirements and leading/lagging indicators. Develop action plans for HS&E trends, coordinate inspections and incident investigations, and deliver HS&E orientations and toolbox talks. Audit hazard assessments and implement occupational hygiene practices, while supporting supervisors in managing occupational injuries and illnesses.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of related work experience in heavy civil, mining, or related industry
- Strong understanding of Mine Health and Safety Administration (MHSA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations and best practices
- Must hold a CSP, Certificate or Diploma/Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent through on-the-job experience
- Has developed technical knowledge of common construction practices, techniques, and equipment within the Heavy Civil Construction and/or Open Pit Mining Industries
- Ability to effectively communicate and present information to the hourly workforce, while also effectively interacting with project management staff, clients, and customers
- Ability to provide a proactive approach to safety, to include identification of operational and organizational issues, as well as develop and implement strategies to solve them
- Demonstrated experience in risk assessment, program development, safety & health training, and accident investigation
- Capable of adapting information/style to the audience, explaining difficult information clearly, influencing, and persuading others towards consensus agreement in straightforward situations
- A strong team player attitude with the ability to effectively adjust to changing priorities and demands
- Strong communication and presentation skills
- Strong computer competency including experience with MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
- Must have and maintain a valid provincial driver's license and driver's abstract
- Successful completion of pre-employment drug & alcohol requirements
- Flexibility to travel to and work at various project sites will be required
- All applicants must be able to show proof of eligibility to work in the United States
Desired Qualifications
- MSHA instructor card (Blue Card) and formal Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) education are an asset
