Job Summary
Public Safety Officer responsible for campus safety and security at Hamline University. Duties include conducting foot and vehicle patrols, responding to crimes, emergencies, and policy violations, liaising with police, fire and emergency responders, deescalating situations and detaining individuals when necessary, writing professional investigative reports, enforcing university policy and state/federal law, completing NIMS and ICS training within 90 days, responding to life safety system alarms, assisting at large university events, and operating security systems (CCTV, VMS, access control, alarms). Requires thorough knowledge of Clery Act requirements and ability to function as a Campus Security Authority. Must complete medical certifications (BLS/First Aid within 90 days; EMR within 1 year). Essential physical requirements include outdoor work, long shifts, and ability to lift 25–50 lbs. Shift: 10-hour shifts (11:30 AM – 9:30 PM), full-time, 12 months a year. Minimum education is a High School diploma or GED; preferred qualifications include an Associate degree and security experience at an institution of higher education. Pay rate: $18 per hour.
Required Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- 1+ year of working with basic computer programs (Word, Excel, etc)
- Ability to respond to varied dynamic, stressful incidents and make critical decisions in a timely manner with limited supervision
- Ability to pass initial and annual defensive tactics training
- Willingness and capability to be mandated to cover for staff shortages when necessary
