Job Summary
Represent clients in eviction matters before the D.C. Superior Court Landlord Tenant Branch, handle cases at the Housing Conditions Court and District's Office of Administrative Hearings, and lead the Housing and Movement Lawyering Team. Mentor staff attorneys, loaned associates, pro bono lawyers, and law clerks while maintaining a small caseload. Participate in joint projects staffing the Landlord Tenant Legal Assistance Network and the Attorney of the Day initiative, plus advocacy and policy reform efforts. Full-time role requiring 5-7 years of post-J.D. experience with 3+ years in litigation and 4+ years in housing law. Base salary starts at $100,000 with experience-based increases; bilingual candidates receive an additional stipend.
Required Qualifications
- Admitted to the D.C. Bar
- Eligible for admission to the D.C. Bar pursuant to D.C. Court of Appeals Rule 46(d) or Rule 46(e) and meet the criteria for practice pursuant to D.C. Court of Appeals Rule 49(c)(8)
- Eligible for admission to the D.C. Bar pursuant to D.C. Court of Appeals Rule 46(c) or 46(d), meet the criteria for practice pursuant to D.C. Court of Appeals Rule 49(c)(9)(B), and have passed the bar examination in D.C. or a UBE jurisdiction
- 5-7 years of post-J.D. legal experience
- 3 years of litigation experience
- 4 years of housing law expertise/practice, preferably in D.C.
- 2 years of supervisory experience
- Prior experience in a legal services or other public interest setting
- Ability to independently perform legal analysis and train staff attorneys in doing the same
- Excellent interpersonal and management skills
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and research skills
- Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written communication
- Excellent negotiation skills
- Ability to proceed effectively in court with little time for preparation and to prepare effectively for contested trials and evidentiary hearings
- Great judgment
- High degree of flexibility and adaptability
- Creative problem-solver in individual work and team projects
- Ability to work with humor and compassion
- Ability to work with and lead other staff and interact with a wide variety of people, including volunteers, in a professional and collaborative manner
- Comfortable working both in-person in an open work environment, with no private offices for staff, and remotely from home
- Familiarity with and ability to master Google Organization & Productivity tools (Gmail, Google Docs, Calendar), Salesforce, and/or ability to learn new technology systems

- Must be fully vaccinated and boosted against Covid-19, unless exempted
