Job Summary
Represent clients in eviction matters at D.C. Superior Court Landlord Tenant Branch, handle cases before Housing Conditions Court, and advise on subsidy termination, rent calculation, and illegal rent increases. Lead staff development, mentoring, and training for attorneys, loaned associates, pro bono lawyers, and law clerks while maintaining a small caseload. Support housing advocacy and policy reform through stakeholder groups, legislative efforts, and tenant education. Participate in joint projects including the Landlord Tenant Legal Assistance Network and the Attorney of the Day initiative. Requires 5-7 years post-J.D. experience with 3+ years litigation and 4+ years in housing law.
Required Qualifications
- Admission to the D.C. Bar or eligibility for admission pursuant to D.C. Court of Appeals Rule 46(d) or Rule 46(e) and criteria for practice pursuant to D.C. Court of Appeals Rule 49(c)(8)
- Admission to the D.C. Bar pursuant to D.C. Court of Appeals Rule 46(c) or 46(d), meeting criteria for practice pursuant to D.C. Court of Appeals Rule 49(c)(9)(B), and passing the bar examination in D.C. or a UBE jurisdiction
- 5-7 years of post-J.D. legal experience
- 3 years of litigation experience
- 4 years of housing law expertise/practice, preferably in D.C.
- 2 years of supervisory experience
- Prior experience in a legal services or other public interest setting
- Ability to independently perform legal analysis and train staff attorneys in doing the same
- Excellent interpersonal and management skills
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and research skills
- Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written communication
- Excellent negotiation skills
- Ability to proceed effectively in court with little time for preparation and to prepare effectively for contested trials and evidentiary hearings
- Great judgment
- High degree of flexibility and adaptability
- Creative problem-solver in individual work and team projects
- Ability to work with humor and compassion
- Ability to work with and lead other staff and interact with a wide variety of people, including volunteers, in a professional and collaborative manner
- Comfortable working both in-person in an open work environment, with no private offices for staff, and remotely from home
- Familiarity with and ability to master Google Organization & Productivity tools (Gmail, Google Docs, Calendar), Salesforce, and/or ability to learn new technology systems
- Willingness to learn and carry out Bread for the City's commitments to building a socially just, racially equitable, and gender affirming culture
- Must be fully vaccinated and boosted against Covid-19, unless exempted
