Job Summary
Housing Specialist provides intensive housing-focused services to families in the Brooklyn Community Services shelter program with the goal of securing permanent housing quickly. Responsibilities include conducting housing assessments and developing individualized Housing Support Plans, assessing eligibility for subsidy programs (CityFHEPS, HCV, LINC, etc.), conducting housing searches, engaging landlords, assisting with apartment applications and move-in logistics, coordinating referrals to aftercare and housing stability services, and maintaining accurate documentation in CARES and shelter systems. Requires knowledge of NYC housing subsidy programs, collaboration with case managers and DHS/partner agencies, and strong advocacy and negotiation skills. Education requirement is a Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Human Services, or related field (MSW preferred); minimum two years of related experience; bilingual ability preferred; criminal background check as per NYC Fair Chance Act.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Human Services, or a related field required; MSW or related Master's degree preferred
- Minimum of two years of experience in housing placement, case management, or social services, with at least one year working in shelter or homeless services
- Knowledge of NYC housing subsidy programs (CityFHEPS, HCV, LINC, etc.), DHS regulations, and CARES system strongly preferred
- Strong relationship-building, negotiation, and advocacy skills; Excellent documentation and organizational abilities
- Bilingual ability strongly preferred (Spanish or other languages) and compliance with NYC Fair Chance Act requirements
