Job Summary
Housing Advocate engages with street homeless individuals, conducts street outreach from an automobile, and helps determine eligibility for Street to Home services while coordinating housing placements. The role requires building registries of chronic (and non-chronic) homeless clients, conducting vulnerability assessments, participating in supervision and training, maintaining records and databases, and collaborating with agencies (Parks Department, NYPD, DSNY, MTA) to respond to 311 calls and address encampments. The position emphasizes motivational interviewing, client relationship-building, and ensuring clients obtain suitable housing solutions; the incumbent works with a partner and spends most shifts in the field. The program serves New York City and upstate New York with a focus on reducing chronic homelessness and maintaining stable housing for clients.
Required Qualifications
- Two years related work experience
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and experience
- Knowledgeable about local benefit agencies and familiarity with substance abuse, mental health, and employment issues
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and electronic record keeping
- Valid NY, NJ, CT, or PA driver’s license with a good driving record
- Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) preferred
