Job Summary

Direct and control vehicular and pedestrian traffic through arm and hand signals before and after school to ensure the safety of children and orderly traffic flow. Give clear, concise signals to stop movement until all pedestrians have crossed, using a hand-held stop sign, reflector vest, cones, whistle, and communication equipment. Judge traffic flow, speed, and direction while noting hazards to report to the Sheriff's Office and enforcing school rules. Write reports for vehicle code violations and adhere to a clean, neat appearance with appropriate attendance and punctuality. Maintain certification with the Stafford County Sheriff's Office and complete required training in First Aid/CPR/AED and Handle with Care.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or its equivalent
  • Valid Virginia Driver's License
  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Must be certified by the Sheriff's Office to conduct Crossing Guard duties
  • Basic safety rules for school buildings
  • Basic safe driving rules and procedures for Crossing Guards
  • Techniques for communicating with children and adults
  • English and grammar usage
  • Current Virginia traffic laws and emergency procedures
  • Complete Handle with Care Training
  • Complete First Aid/CPR/AED Training
  • Direct and control vehicular and pedestrian traffic through arm and hand signals, after training by the Stafford County Sheriff's Office and the Stafford County Public Schools' Safety & Security Office
  • Use hand-held stop sign, reflector vest, cones, whistle, gloves and communication equipment
  • Judge traffic flow, speed and direction of travel and group pedestrians in a logical manner
  • Provide own transportation, be punctual, and reliable
  • Work cooperatively in a team environment to meet goals
  • Organize and perform work independently
  • Meet deadlines for all work even when working on multiple projects
  • Show sustained effort and enthusiasm in quality and quantity of work
