Job Summary
Receive, prioritize, and expedite emergency and routine blood orders from regional hospitals and internal laboratories. Perform electronic data entry for critical processing steps and manually document regulatory information per Good Manufacturing Practices. Serve as a liaison between external customers and medical staff regarding patient care and regulatory issues. Package blood components for hospital and satellite laboratory delivery, arranging transportation logistics in accordance with regulatory guidelines. Monitor and replenish platelet stock levels, rotate emergency uncross-matched Red Cells, and assess returned components for acceptability. Operate and maintain equipment including the X-Ray irradiator, and respond to temperature alarms on the Rees Temperature Monitoring System. Store quarantined components appropriately and dispose of unusable blood per protocol. This 3rd shift position (Wed-Sat, 1830-0500) requires intermittent work in cold rooms and the ability to lift up to 60 pounds. Candidates need two years of college and one year of experience in blood banking, shipping/receiving, and telephone customer service.
Required Qualifications
- Two years of college education, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- One year of experience in the blood banking industry
- One year of experience in shipping, receiving, and distribution
- One year of experience in receiving telephone orders and providing customer service
- Ability to perform high-level communication with physicians and clinicians in a stressful environment
- Ability to work independently and unsupervised in meeting the required deadlines and workload of internal and external customers
- Ability to perform accurate, expedited computer order entry and produce distribution reports
- Ability to work in a team-oriented environment
- The Ability to lift and carry up to 60 pounds
- Frequent lifting and carrying up to 35 pounds
- Infrequent pushing of up to 500 pounds on a wheeled rack in a cold environment
- Manual dexterity sufficient to perform frequent data entry
- The Ability to remain on task amid multiple audio and visual distractions
- The Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
- The Ability to comprehend the criticality of the blood components being prepared for transfusion, the dollar value of blood components being handled, and the necessity to follow all regulatory rules and regulations (AABB, CFR, EU, CLIA, HIPAA, and State), including the FDA's Good Manufacturing Practices in all work activities
- Heavy lifting and constant standing
- Intermittent work (up to 30 minutes) in cold rooms (1–6 °C) and (up to 15 minutes) in walk-in freezers (-35 °C)
- Prepared to work extended and/or consecutive shifts and/or possibly at a different location during periods of inclement weather or emergency operations
- Incumbents must be able to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts as assigned
- This position involves direct exposure to bloodborne pathogens
