Job Summary
The Hospital Coder is responsible for applying coding and classification systems to accurately select diagnostic and procedural codes necessary for optimal reimbursement. Key responsibilities include using computerized encoding systems, ensuring adherence to coding guidelines such as ICD-10 and UHDDS, and querying providers for clarification when necessary. This role emphasizes ethical coding practices and compliance with coding policies, while also requiring ongoing education in coding. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in multiple coding systems and possess strong written and verbal communication skills.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma/G.E.D. - required
- Prior experience in hospital medical coding - preferred
- Applicants must receive a score of 80% or above on assessment
- Coding certification / credential through AHIMA or AAPC and be in good standing - required
- Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate
Desired Qualifications
- Prior experience with 3M 360 and EPIC system
- Knowledge of ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS or CPT-4 Coding classification system
- Excellent computer skills, navigating multiple systems at once, troubleshooting
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Detail-oriented and efficient while maintaining productivity
