Job Summary
Volunteer Hospice companion roles include offering friendly visits and conversation to provide companionship, reading aloud or sharing memories, engaging in activities (music, crafts, puzzles, games), providing walking companionship and bedside presence, offering respite for caregivers, sitting vigil during end-of-life, supporting legacy or memory projects, and optional pet therapy or haircare visits. The role requires strong interpersonal skills, reliable communication with the Volunteer Coordinator, ability to manage a flexible schedule for patient assignments, and completing onboarding/training. May also involve assisting with office tasks or providing virtual support and volunteer-hours reporting.
Required Qualifications
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to build an ongoing connection with a patient over time (schedule-flexible)
- Reliable and responsive communication with the Volunteer Coordinator (primarily via email)
- Willingness to complete administrative requirements, including timely submission of volunteer hours
- Comfort interacting with people from diverse backgrounds
- Openness to supporting individuals and families navigating the end-of-life
- Commitment to completing required onboarding and training
- Provide friendly visits and conversation for companionship
- Read aloud, share stories, or reflect on meaningful life memories
- Engage in activities such as music, crafts, TV, puzzles, or games
- Provide walking companionship (when safe)
- Sit at the bedside offering a calm and supportive presence
- Provide short breaks (respite) for caregivers
- Sit vigil and offer comfort during final stages of life
- Support legacy or memory projects
- Provide pet therapy visits (must be therapy dog-certified)
- Offer haircuts (must be licensed provider)
- Assist with office tasks or provide virtual support (calls, check-ins, events)
