Job Summary
Control the Vermeer 24-40 Horizontal Directional Drill to install underground electrical work on Texas highways, adjusting pressure and rotation while monitoring depth and direction. Conduct daily inspections, check oil levels and tire pressure, and manage drilling fluid to ensure equipment safety and performance. Operate hand tools for digging, loading, and unloading supplies, then pull cables through drilled holes and place conduit, splicing sections, and installing anchors to complete construction tasks. Always wear appropriate PPE, set up fire extinguishers, and ensure work zones meet safety standards for lane closures and debris removal. Maintain blueprints and use locating equipment to avoid obstacles throughout the job site.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Candidates must possess authorization to work in the United States
- Must have physical strength, balance, hand-eye coordination, and stamina necessary to complete jobs in various areas
- Must be able to lift 50-100 lbs
- Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions
- Must be able to work with exposure to noise, fumes, vibrations, and heights
- Must be able to work with prolonged periods of standing, kneeling, stooping, reaching, crawling, and climbing
- Must be able to remain flexible as specific assignments change
- Proficiency in operating a Vermeer 24-40 Horizontal Directional Drill
- Ability to understand blueprints and locate underground utilities by hand or Vectron
- Ability to check oil level, tire pressure, other fluids (including hydraulic), grease points on all equipment and vehicles daily
- Ability to organize tools, toolbox, trailer and replenish stock daily for preparation
- Ability to set fire extinguisher alongside the drill on every jobsite
- Ability to ensure work zone and equipment is free of garbage and debris
- Ability to conduct inspections on all equipment and ensure that the equipment is appropriately cared for
- Ability to assist in loading & unloading of equipment and supplies needed to complete the job
- Ability to hand load rods
- Ability to prepare tooling for product install
- Ability to hand dig with shovels, post hole diggers, jackhammer, and picks
- Ability to set up the drilling rig at the entry and exit points
- Ability to operate the drill controls to maintain the desired depth and direction
- Ability to monitor the drilling process using locating equipment to avoid obstacles
- Ability to manage the drilling fluid (mud) used to lubricate the drill bit and remove debris
- Ability to pull the electrical cable through the drilled hole once the pilot hole is completed
- Ability to place conduit / cable, or pipe in trenches, splice conduit sections, install couplers, place anchors, pedestals, ground boxes, etc to complete construction tasks
- Always wear appropriate PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) including, safety vest, hard-hat, protective eyewear, gloves, ear plugs, dust mask, and steel-toed boots
- Ensure that safety cones, lights, and appropriate vehicle flagging, and lane closure precautions are met
Desired Qualifications
- 3 years of prior experience
- Class A CDL w/ tanker endorsement
