Job Summary

The VITAS Home Health Aide (HHA) provides personal care and services to hospice patients as a non-exempt employee to augment care provided by family members or other caregivers. Responsibilities include assisting with hygiene, meals, ambulation, certain treatments under nurse supervision, reading and recording vital signs, maintaining a safe environment, supporting mental alertness, offering emotional support, reporting changes to the VITAS Nurse and interdisciplinary team, teaching basic personal care to the primary caregiver, and completing at least 12 hours of in-service training per calendar year. The role requires meeting HHA/CNA qualifications, state certifications where applicable, and traveling as required. The HHA may not perform certain invasive or unassigned tasks and must follow the plan of care and nurse direction.

Required Qualifications

  • High School graduate or equivalent preferred
  • Meets personnel qualifications of a Home Health Aide as specified in 42 C.F.R. Section 484.4 and Section 484.36
  • Documented evidence of 75 hours of training as specified in 42 C.F.R. Sections 484.36 (a)(1)
  • Documented evidence that Home Health Aide has successfully completed a Competency Evaluation program as described in 42 C.F.R. Section 484.36(b)

Additional Requirements

  • Be assigned to any institutional setting is prohibited
  • Cannot administer medications
  • Cannot irrigate body cavities (e.g. enema)
  • Cannot irrigate a colostomy or wound
  • Cannot perform gastric lavage or gavage
  • Cannot catheterize a patient
  • Cannot provide any personal care not assigned by the nurse or plan of care
