Contract Newspaper Advisor for Haddam Killingworth High School's Cougar Chronicle. The adviser will create a journalistically professional learning atmosphere for students, empower student decision-making on content, and ensure the publication remains an open forum. Responsibilities include developing student competence across news values, story selection (news, feature, sports, opinion), ethical and legal knowledge, interviewing, notes, attribution, and all stages of writing (news, feature, sports, editorials, columns, reviews); guiding students in design, layout, photography, and advertising procedures; establishing and applying editorial policies aligned with the First Amendment and the Society of Professional Journalists/Sigma Delta Chi’s Code of Ethics; acting as a supportive yet non-censoring mentor throughout publishing cycles; planning and evaluating student participation against journalism standards; and supervising supplies, equipment, and the publication’s finances in accordance with school policy. The role involves regular planning and training sessions with staff, meeting schedules and deadlines, and providing guidance on coverage of school life while promoting fiscal responsibility.
