Job Summary
Histotechnician performs routine histology procedures within the Northwestern Medicine system, embedding, staining, and preparing tissue sections for microscopic review by Pathologists, with emphasis on quality control, documentation, and communication with pathologists, residents, and coordinators. Responsibilities include embedding tissues, operating microtome and automated staining equipment, performing special staining techniques, preparing frozen tissue sections, gross examination support, dictation documentation, and adherence to regulatory and quality standards (CLIA, TJC, CAP). The role supports ongoing safety, training of staff, and potential participation in process-improvement projects within the laboratory.
Required Qualifications
- Associates degree (or 60 semester hours with biology/chemistry coursework) or equivalent qualifying education to take the ASCP certifying exam
- Must obtain Histotechnician (HT) ASCP certification within 1 year of hire
- Must meet requirements for performing high complexity testing as defined by CLIA and accreditation agencies (TJC, CAP)
