Job Summary
Perform histologic procedures on patient specimens including identification, processing, fixation, embedding, microtomy, sectioning, cover-slipping, and staining. Assist pathologists with frozen sections, manage immunohistochemical procedures, and collect or dispose of chemical solutions and medical waste. Evaluate and document quality control according to established guidelines while participating in departmental quality assurance activities. Collect, change, and dispose of chemical solutions from processors, histologic medical waste, and chemical fixatives. This full-time role at Glens Falls Hospital in the Adirondack foothills includes weekday hours between 4 am and 5 pm. The department offers an intensive on-the-job training program for new grads and opportunities for cross-training and certification for experienced candidates.
Required Qualifications
- 2-year Associates in Science in a certified histological technician program or higher
- New York State License Histotechnician
- ASCP board certification
- Ability to read and understand Standard Operating Procedures (SOPS) and departmental procedures
- Ability to understand and comply with department/organizational safety manuals
- Ability to understand communication with attending pathologist and or pathology assistant in both written and oral forms
- Ability to demonstrate effective problem solving and team building skills
- Ability to coach and orient newer staff regarding SOPS
