Job Summary
Histology Specialist to own and run Retro's in-house histology capabilities. You will manage day-to-day histology workflows, triage and schedule work across programs, perform tissue and organoid embedding, paraffin and frozen sectioning, vibratome sectioning, and slide preparation for multiple teams. You will conduct IHC and IF staining, H&E and special stains, develop SOPs, operate histology equipment, coordinate with CROs, decalcify tissues as needed, assist with imaging, manage supply inventory, and provide tissue-handling guidance. Ideal candidates have 3-5 years of hands-on histology experience (FFPE), proficiency in multiple sectioning modalities, experience with antibody validation and protocol troubleshooting, and a track record of independent, multi-request workflow management. Bonus: experience in biotech/pharma/academic histology cores, image analysis/digital pathology tools, training others, and GLP environments. Located in Redwood City, CA, this is a full-time role within Retro’s Scientific Operations lab, focusing on building an in-house histology capability to support Microglia, Tissue Reprogramming, and Autophagy programs.
Required Qualifications
- 3-5 years of hands-on histology experience with FFPE workflows (embedding, microtomy, and staining)
- Proficiency with paraffin sectioning, cryosectioning, and vibrating sectioning
- Experience with IHC and/or IF staining, including antibody titration and protocol troubleshooting
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple concurrent requests
- Excellent organization and attention to detail
- Clear communication with scientists and capability to coordinate tissue workflows
- Hands-on and proactive approach to lab tasks
- Bonus: experience with biotech/pharma/academic histology cores, image analysis, digital pathology tools, and GLP or regulated lab environments
