Job Summary
A 1st Class Ship Fitter lays out and fabricates metal structural parts and braces them in position within the hull of a vessel for welding. The role requires reading blueprints or templates to determine component positions, laying out and assembling parts, marking reference lines, aligning pieces, drilling holes, installing temporary fasteners, and performing tack welding of clips and brackets. The fitter must be able to work in confined spaces and at heights, handle heavy metal parts, and follow safety and quality policies. The position also involves directing subordinate ship fitters and tack welders, and performing related duties such as cutting, bending, and shaping plates and beams; overtime may be required. Required Qualifications
- Five (5) years of marine experience or four (4) years of continuous company experience preferred
- Ability to comprehend blueprints, sketches, and templates
- Ability to enter and move through manholes into confined spaces
- Proficient in layout, cutting, measuring, and fitting
- Ability to work in confined/enclosed spaces
- Must be able to work at elevations greater than 5 feet
- Ability to wear/work a respirator when applicable
- Must adhere to company safety and quality policies
