Job Summary
Layout and fabricate metal structural parts such as plates, bulkheads, and frames, and brace them in position within the hull for riveting or welding. Prepare molds and templates for fabrication of nonstandard parts, locate reference lines and align parts using jacks, turnbuckles, clips, wedges, and mauls, and install fasteners for welding or riveting. Tack weld clips and brackets in place before permanent welding; perform duties with safety and in compliance with rules. Requires shipyard experience and ability to work flexible hours including overtime, weekends, and holidays. Housing assistance is available. Proficiency with blueprints/templates, scribe and hand tools, and knowledge of ship terminology and OSHA regulations are essential.
Required Qualifications
- Education/Experience: High school diploma or GED equivalent, plus three to five years of ship fitting experience desired.
- Knowledge of materials, methods, and appropriate tools to construct marine vessels.
- Able to cut and burn with torch or plasma cutter.
- Tack weld with 7018 6011 stainless rods, MIG, and aluminum.
- Knowledge of ship terminology, safety, and OSHA regulations.
- Ability to read blueprints and comprehend written, oral, or diagram forms.
