Job Summary
A 1st Class Ship Fitter lays out and fabricates metal structural parts and braces them in position within hull of vessel for welding. Responsibilities include determining positions of structural components from blueprints/templates, directing subordinate ship fitters and tack welders, laying out parts per blueprints, marking reference lines, positioning parts in hull, marking drilling holes, installing temporary fasteners, installing packing/gaskets/liners, tack welding clips/brackets prior to welding, bending/shaping plates and beams, and working in confined/enclosed spaces. Must be able to work in elevations greater than 5 feet and wear a respirator when applicable; overtime may be required. Requires reading blueprints, tolerances, and templates; strong emphasis on precision and safety in a marine fabrication environment. Required Qualifications
- Five (5) years of marine experience or four (4) years with continuous company experience preferred
- Comprehends blueprints, sketches, and templates
- Able to enter and move through manholes to reach and work in internally confined spaces
