Job Summary
A 1st Class Ship Fitter lays out and fabricates metal structural parts and braces them in position within hull of vessel for welding. The role requires implementing blueprints/templates to position components, directing junior ship fitters, performing layout and tack welding, and handling heavy metal parts in confined spaces. Candidates should have strong blueprint comprehension, ability to work in elevations above 5 feet, and experience with measuring, cutting, drilling, and aligning parts for welding and riveting, along with adherence to safety and quality policies. Required Qualifications
- Five (5) years of marine experience or four (4) years of continuous company experience preferred
- Ability to read and comprehend blueprints, sketches, and templates
- Ability to enter and move through manholes to reach confined spaces
- Ability to layout, cut, measure, and fit components per blueprints or templates
- Ability to determine the position of structural components from blueprints/templates
- Ability to direct subordinate ship fitters and tack welders
- Experience locating and marking reference lines (center, buttock, frame lines) and aligning parts in hulls
- Ability to perform drilling hole locations and install temporary fasteners for welding or riveting
- Ability to bend, flange, cut, and shape metal plates, beams, and other heavy parts
- Ability to work in confined/enclosed spaces and at elevations
- Ability to wear a respirator where applicable
- Commitment to company policies, safety and quality systems
- Willingness to work overtime
