Job Summary
Shipfitter will perform steel and aluminum structural work on marine vessels, including U.S. Naval Vessels, Military Sealift Command, and commercial ships, with minimal supervision. Responsibilities include reading blueprints and drawings, fabricating templates, installing structures, and welding using SMAW/FCAW/GMAW. Must adhere to detailed specs, operate hand and power tools, and document Condition Found Reports. Requires OSHA PPE compliance, ability to interpret ship repair terminology, and at least four years of relevant experience. OSHA-compliant PPE, precise measurements in US customary and metric systems, and effective communication with supervisors and teammates are essential.
Required Qualifications
- Shipyard experience is required
- Strong comprehension of instructions, drawings, and correspondence.
- In-depth understanding of ship repair terminology and compartment location nomenclature.
- Physical capability to wear PPE per OSHA standards.
- Ability to write clear Condition Found Reports (CFR) detailing ship material condition and recommended actions.
- Effective communication skills with supervisors and team members.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting structural drawings, including weld symbols and Navy damage control diagrams.
- Experience fabricating templates, squaring plates, and installing perpendiculars on ships.
- Proficiency with oxy-acetylene torch cutting and washing.
- Welding experience in SMAW, FCAW, and GMAW techniques.
- Safe operation of hand and power tools (grinders, saws, drills).
- Knowledge of structural shop fabrication equipment (shears, punches, brakes).
- Understanding of the aluminum 5XXX process.
- Strong mathematical skills for measurements using US customary and metric systems.
- Minimum of four years of relevant experience.
