Job Summary
Highway Technician role with INDOT’s Greenfield District. Responsible for operating highway maintenance and traffic equipment, performing snow and ice removal, maintaining signs and markings, and responding to emergencies. Duties include inspecting materials, coordinating with contractors to ensure compliance with standards, and conducting testing across construction, geotechnical, and material-testing activities. The role may involve specialized areas such as Bridge Maintenance, Construction inspection, and Geotechnical testing, with potential advancement into supervisory capacity based on agency needs. Requires CDL (or ability to obtain within 90 days), ability to read technical documents, lead crews, work outdoors in varying weather, and lift up to 50 pounds. CDL training is provided onsite; bilingual or additional certifications may apply depending on assignment.
Required Qualifications
- Must possess a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or obtain one with the first 90 days of employment
- Must pass and submit to a drug test as a condition of employment
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local highway guidelines, laws and regulations, principles, and practices for purposes of construction inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair of highway
- Knowledge of drafting and surveying techniques
- Ability to independently lead and coordinate the work of a crew in the field
- Ability to read, interpret and follow technical documents
- Must be able to endure exposure to inclement weather
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds
- Ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, dragging, stooping, standing, and walking for long periods of time
