Job Summary
Highway Maintenance Technician at INDOT. Maintain Indiana highways and interstates, perform winter operations, pothole filling, debris pick-up, drainage maintenance, traffic control during emergencies, and routine inspections. Entry-level with opportunities for career advancement; mandatory overtime for emergency operations. CDL training provided onsite for certain roles; CDL holders may earn additional hourly pay. Responsibilities include operating highway maintenance equipment, ensuring safety policies, maintaining signs and markings, documenting work in the Work Management System, and coordinating with a supervisor. Positions may include specialized roles (Asset Inspector, Heavy Equipment Operator, Herbicide, Shared workforce) based on assignment.
Required Qualifications
- Must possess a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or obtain one with the first 90 days of employment
- Pass and submit to a drug test as a condition of employment
- General Knowledge of federal, state, and local highway guidelines, laws and regulations, principles, and practices for purposes of construction inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair of highway
- Broad knowledge of Microsoft computer programs to include Word, Outlook, and Excel
- Ability to read, interpret and follow technical documents
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds
- Ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, dragging, stooping, standing, and walking for long periods of time
- Must be able to endure exposure to inclement weather
- Must possess a valid CDL (Class A preferred for some roles)
- High School Diploma or High School Equivalent acceptable for consideration
- Two or more years of related maintenance or field experience preferred
- A degree is not required. However, a High School Diploma or High School Equivalent may be considered
