Job Summary
High School ELA teachers will deliver a literature-centered curriculum across multiple high schools, prioritizing inclusive texts, student-led discourse, and preparation for AP, SAT, and college coursework. Responsibilities include guiding students in reading, writing, discussion, analyzing texts (including works by Baldwin, Morrison, Fitzgerald, Shakespeare, and Gyasi), differentiating instruction, analyzing student work trends with leadership to drive instructional improvements, and collaborating with department and grade-level teams. The role also emphasizes building positive relationships with students and families, engaging in weekly meetings and practice-based professional development, and contributing to a culture aligned with Uncommon Schools’ core values.
Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated commitment to supporting students’ social emotional and academic development
- Enthusiasm for collaborating with internal and external partners
- Self-directed learner (solicits and implements feedback)
- Bachelor's degree required; NY state certification eligibility requirements; enroll in teacher preparation program and maintain GPA 2.5+ if not educated in teaching
- Academic expertise in Humanities, English, Social Sciences, or related fields
