Job Summary
Herdsperson provide support to Herd Technicians in routine animal care and general farm tasks, focusing on the welfare and well-being of pigs. Responsibilities include feeding, watering, vaccinating, injecting medications, performing basic veterinary procedures, assisting in moving animals, sanitation of farm areas with high pressure equipment, processing piglets (injections, castration, docking tails, ear notching), maintaining accurate production records, following Standard Operating Procedures and animal welfare policies, and assisting with facility and equipment maintenance. The role involves operating farm equipment (mowers, tractors, trucks, etc.), adhering to environmental, safety, and biosecurity requirements, and a schedule that may include nights, weekends, and holidays. The position emphasizes teamwork, adaptability to changing plans, and safety in a dynamic farm environment.
Required Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED preferred
- Previous livestock handling helpful
- Ability to do hard physical labor
- Strong commitment to teamwork
- Willingness to shower daily in and out of facility
- Ability to follow instructions and deal with standardized situations
- Must be able to work an average 48-hour work week, which can vary frequently
- Weekend, evening, and holiday work required as needed
- Must be on call for emergency situations to include but not limit to, power outages or personnel shortages
- Ability to work well with others in fast paced, dynamic environment
