Job Summary
Heavy Oil Process Engineer role focused on leading and mentoring a multidisciplinary team on projects ranging from FEED studies to full turnkey EPFC for heavy oil processing. Responsibilities include overseeing fabrication and assembly in Propak’s Airdrie facilities, developing client relationships, and providing technical leadership in SAGD/wellpad water treatment, glycol dehydration, and related processes. Travel domestically and internationally for startup and commissioning support; work with HYSYS/ProMax/VMGSim tooling; contribute to PFD/HMB/P&ID deliverables and related design documentation.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from an accredited university
- Professional Engineer registered and in good standing with Alberta Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) or eligible for membership
- 5+ years of experience in heavy oil processing with SAGD, wellpads, and water treating
- Experience designing alternative processes in Glycol Dehydration, Sweetening, Mechanical Refrigeration, Oil Processing, Compression is considered an asset
- EPC and/or Fabricator experience
- Excellent communications skills required to interact with client and internal team members
- Experience working with HYSYS and other engineering software (BRE or BR&E ProMax, VMGSim Symmetry, Flarenet)
- Experience in sizing process equipment is an asset (separators, treaters, FWKO, heat exchangers, PSVs, flare systems, control valves, pumps, reciprocating, rotary screw, and centrifugal compressors)
- Experience with typical process deliverables (PFD, HMB, P&ID, Line List, Design Basis Memorandum, Cause & Effect Diagrams, Control Narratives, Datasheets, Hydraulics, Line Sizing)
- Knowledge of Modular or Modularization (Desire to leverage in projects)
- Experience with process safety concepts and equipment selection
- Ability to lead and mentor junior engineers
