Job Summary
Operate and maintain light to heavy road construction equipment including motor graders, pavers, rollers, chip spreaders, loaders, backhoes, and tractors to construct and maintain streets and drainage structures. Estimate required materials for construction or repairs, perform minor maintenance on machinery, and patch roadways. Utilize survey level equipment to set ground elevations, install culverts, and operate excavators for shoulder widening. Provide flagger assistance and assist in clearing debris and tires from work areas. Maintain tools and machinery in good condition while transporting materials and heavy equipment, including semi-trailers. Positions are required to be on call and/or on-duty to assist the community in preparing for, responding to, and recovering from severe weather events. This role supports the maintenance of existing roadways and drainage structures within Cameron County.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- four (4) years of experience performing technical and/or repair work operating light to heavy road construction and equipment
- Minimum Texas Class B Commercial driver's license (CDL) with a tank and air brakes endorsement
- ability to exert medium physical effort in medium work
- ability to lift, carry, push and/or pull objects and materials of heavy weight (50 - 100 pounds)
- ability to climb, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motion
- ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals
- ability to communicate orally
- exposure to adverse environmental conditions
- exposure to damp/wet surfaces, duty conditions, fumes and odors, flammable liquids and high noise levels
- Must submit to a drug and alcohol evaluation
