Heavy Equipment Operator (Excavator) (Suncor)

Job Summary

Operate various sizes and models of excavators to complete assigned work, reading stakes and placing grades as needed. Ensure compliance with all company, client, and legislated safety policies while using adequate PPE. Review safe work plans and hazard assessments prior to job commencement, then complete equipment walk-arounds, safety checks, and field-level risk assessments to ensure proper equipment function. Report any necessary repairs, incidents, near misses, or damage immediately to maintenance teams or supervisors. Join the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 955 and work 14x14 shifts with 12-hour days and nights, with transportation provided from Fort McMurray to the Suncor site.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 2-3 years of experience operating excavator
  • Minimum one year experience in a mining atmosphere preferred
  • Willing and able to work in soft ground conditions (Muskeg) and rip frost above shovels
  • Must be able to follow instructions to ensure safe equipment operation
  • Must be proficient in English, both verbal and written
  • Must be well-organized and favor safety above everything else
  • Ability to complete required fitness-to-work testing requirements
  • CSO OR BSO Certification
  • Silica Awareness Training
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License with acceptable drivers abstract (pulled within 30 days)
  • High school diploma, GED, and/or post-secondary education is considered an asset
  • The successful candidate will be required to join the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 955
  • Valid CSO or BSO (Energy Safety Canada)
  • Silica Awareness (Energy Safety Canada)
  • Wood Buffalo Wildlife Awareness (Energy Safety Canada)
  • OHS Alberta Legislation Awareness (Energy Safety Canada)
  • H2S Awareness (Energy Safety Canada)
  • Field Ergonomics
  • Be subject to Random Testing at: Suncor, Suncor Fort Hills and Kearl sites
  • Undergo and successfully pass the following pre-employment testing: Breath Alcohol Test
  • Undergo and successfully pass the following pre-employment testing: Urine Drug Test
  • Undergo and successfully pass the following pre-employment testing: Fitness-to-Work Health Assessment
  • Undergo and successfully pass the following pre-employment testing: Audiometric Testing
  • Undergo and successfully pass the following pre-employment testing: Vision Screening
  • Undergo and successfully pass the following pre-employment testing: Criminal Record Check
