Job Summary
Heavy Equipment Mechanic I or II responsible for repairs and maintenance of county road and bridge department vehicles and equipment, including routine maintenance (oil/filters, brake replacement), safety inspections, and diagnostics. Performs repairs on heavy equipment such as excavators, dump trucks, street sweepers, backhoes, and loaders; may fabricate/weld parts and operate welding equipment at higher levels; drives and services vehicles; may train new staff. Requires ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical problems, respond to calls during off hours, and work independently at higher levels. Positions may be filled at I, II, or III based on expertise, with an internal career ladder and growth opportunities. Required Qualifications
- Non-Supervisory role
- Entry- or journey-level mechanic experience preferred per level
- Ability to perform routine maintenance and diagnostics on heavy equipment
- DOT inspections
- Experience with gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, brakes
- Welding/fabrication capability as needed for Level III
- Ability to operate heavy vehicles and equipment
- Maintain repair and maintenance records
- Able to work off-hours on-call as required
